Welcome to Troop 72 and 4172

100 Years of Scouting

San Bruno’s Troop 72 received its first charter from the Boy Scout of America in May 1917. We are one of the longest running Scout units in the Bay Area and have been in continuous service since 1922. On February 1, 2019, the first day such a unit could be formed, we founded our partner Girls Troop 4172.

We meet Thursday evenings, year-round at 7:00 p.m. Meetings last 90 minutes. During the school year we meet at John Muir Elementary School and during the summer months we meet at San Bruno City Park. Our Troops place an emphasis on high adventure. We plan at least one weekend outdoor activity a month. Most months, those events include opportunities to camp outdoors. Our Troop spends one week each year at summer camp at Wente Scout Reservation near Willits California. During the summer, we feature a high adventure trip, such as backpacking in the Sierras and treks to the BSA High-Adventure Bases. We currently have the following trips planned:

  • 2024: Sea Base (Florida and St. Thomas)
  • 2025: Northern Tier High Adventure
  • 2026: National Scout Jamboree at Summit Bechtal Reserve (to be run by Pacific Skyline Council)
  • 2027: Philmont Scout Ranch BSA. The 26th World Scout Jamboree will also take place this year near Gdańsk, Poland

Our members are from San Bruno and the surrounding communities including Millbrae, Pacifica and South San Francisco. If you are a boy or girl between 11 and 17 and interested in joining Scouts, you can reach us through the "Contact Us" link on the left side of this page. Follow the "About Us" link to the left to learn more about us.

This Week's Announcements

Posted on May 30 2025 - 2:33pm

Upcoming Troop Meetings:

  • Our next Troop meeting is on June 6 at 7:00 p.m. This is our final meeting at John Muir until school restarts in the fall. Duct Tape Patrol is doing flags. They should arrive 15 minutes early to prepare.
  • We are moving the start time for meeting taking place at San Bruno City Park to 6:30 (since it starts getting dark at 8:00, especially during the second half of the summer). We'll return to our 7:00 start times when we return to John Muir at the end of August.
  • Our next PLC meeting is on August 7 at 6:00 p.m. We'll be covering meeting plans for June and July - I know many Scouts families have vacation plans during this time - PLC members should know their availability

Please remember the Troop meeting start times (6:30 in San Bruno City Park and 7:00 at John Muir). PLC members should be there 10-15 minutes early for last minute instructions. I realize some of our Scouts have another activity immediately prior to the Troop meeting, but we ask everyone else to be courteous and be on time to the start of the meeting.

Upcoming Events:

  • We have multiple Eagle project work days on the calendar - please keep your eye on the calendar for those!
  • 2026 National Jamboree sign-ups are now open: https://scoutingevent.com/031-2026NationalJamboree

Summer Events:

After Summer Camp and Northern Tier, we're planning three more Troop campouts (these are all still in the planning phase - details for these will follow):

  • July 31 - August 3: Backpacking in the Sierras.
  • August 11 - August 14: "Trail to First Class" campout near Half Moon Bay.
  • August 23 - August 24: River Rafting on the American River.

2025 Camporee!

Posted on May 13 2025 - 6:51pm

At the end of April, a group of Scouts drove up to Boulder Creek Scouts Reservation for two nights at the annual Camporee. The tents--and the scouts--got a little wet, but it was a lot of fun!

Pulgas Ridge Hike

Posted on Apr 22 2025 - 9:09pm

On Saturday, the Scouts went on a hike at Pulgas Ridge, which is part of the Foggy Trail series. Some used this hike to earn a special patch once 3 out of the 9 hikes in the series are completed. Other scouts trained for Northern Tier, adding extra weight to make it a little more challenging!

Dante's Eagle Project

Posted on Jan 19 2025 - 9:17am

On Saturday, Dante led scouts to build three wooden benches, construct a wooden coffee table, and paint three garden boxes for St. Roberts Elementary School. The finished projects were great!

Mt Wittenberg Hike

Posted on Jan 12 2025 - 9:51pm

The Mt Wittenberg trail, approximately 5 miles with 1300 feet of elevation gain, was a moderate hike that the scouts were able to partake in. They did great navigating where they needed to go with their maps and compasses!

2024 Scouting for Food

Posted on Nov 20 2024 - 6:42pm

This year's Scouting for Food drive was a huge success. Thank you so much to all the scouts who helped donate, pass out fliers, and pick up food!
